Biography
Rachel Chalmers
Research Director, Research Director, The 451 Group.

Rachel covers Web services and software platforms for The 451 Group, and has pioneered specialist technology coverage in such areas as the evolution of Java, 3D modeling and graphics, the emergence of Web application servers, Linux and open source software, embedded operating systems and databases, Web services standards and distributed application management. Her most recent Special Report - V for Virtualization: Transforming the datacenter, driving M&A - looked at server virtualization, and in particular the ecosystem that is growing up around x86 server virtualization. She has covered infrastructure software for the company since its debut in April 2000. She was a lead analyst on the 'Herding cats: managing distributed applications' and 'The SOAP Bubble: a Web services taxonomy,' Special Reports published by The 451 Group, the first comprehensive surveys of distributed application management and Web services to be published.

In 2000-01, Rachel hosted TV451, produced as a joint venture with the Oracle Technology Network and featuring among its guests British author and scholar Robin Bloor, Apache and CollabNet founder Brian Behlendorf, and Bruce Perens, primary author of the Open Source Definition. She was a regular guest on TechTV's talk show Silicon Spin, hosted by John Dvorak. She has written for Salon, New Scientist, Feed Magazine, HQ, Internet.au, the Melbourne Age and the Sydney Morning Herald. Rachel began covering the technology sector in 1995, when she helped launch Computer Week, later PC Week Australia, for Australian Provincial Newspapers. In 1996, she was appointed Deputy Editor of the award-winning Managing Information Systems (MIS) Magazine for the Strategic Publishing Group. In this capacity, she worked closely with Strategic's buy-side research and analysis organization to investigate the use of information technology at Australia's largest retail, financial, industrial and manufacturing enterprises.
