NNO7:  Planning for Bandwidth Requirements and Energy Efficiency in a Data Center
Thursday, August 7, 2008, 10:15 am - 11:15 am

Speaker:
John D'Ambrosia, Sr Scientist, Components Technology, Force 10 Networks.

There are a multitude of issues confronting designers of large data centers. While capacity planning to ensure ample network bandwidth is available for the next generation of applications and services, planning for power and cooling of the data center is equally important, especially in light of skyrocketing energy costs. Consolidation and virtualization have received considerable press as two ways to engineer data centers to improve their efficiency and lower operating costs. Two projects currently underway in the IEEE 802.3 Working Group, 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet, and 802.3ba 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s Ethernet, may be the next two powerful tools in the data center architect’s arsenal to tackle tough data center design problems.

This session will look at the issues designers are facing and discuss the potential impact of these new projects on capacity planning and energy efficiency in next generation data centers.
