NS4:  Virtualization: Security Disruptor or Enabler?
Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 10:15 am - 11:15 am

Speaker:
Nand Mulchandani, Senior Director, Product Management & Marketing, VMware.

Virtualization is one of the most important technologies of the next generation data center, yet one of the most disruptive; even disrupting core assumptions made in security infrastructure and operations. With any new technology, the security impact can be viewed as an opportunity to charge forward or to retreat. This talk provides a comprehensive analysis of the complex relationship between virtualization and security. The talk starts with a baseline comparison of physical and virtual infrastructure. Next, the discussion examines the reality faced by existing physical security solutions in a virtual infrastructure: virtual switches, offline virtual machines, the hypervisor, and ethereal machine movement. Next the talk focuses on real vs. perceived threats to the virtual infrastructure. Finally, the presentation highlights virtualization as an enabler and how security solutions and operations may take advantage of services unique to virtualization to solve some of today's toughest security challenges.
